Hearing and listening
Parent guide
A hearing problem can look like “not listening” or late talking. Audiology (a hearing check by a trained tester) is a simple first step.
Why check hearing?
Talking grows from what a child clearly hears. Fluid in the ear after colds, or a real hearing loss, can hide quiet sounds. A hearing test does not mean something is “wrong with you”. It stops years of the wrong guess.
Hearing vs listening
Some children hear beeps in a quiet room but cannot follow talking in a noisy class. That can be attention (ADHD), language, or too much sound. Hearing staff, speech therapy, and daily-skill therapy then work as a team.
Questions we hear in clinic
My child hears the doorbell. Hearing is fine, right?
Not always. Hearing a bang is not the same as hearing soft speech sounds.
Can an autistic child do a hearing test?
Often yes, with extra time and a calm room. Tell the tester what helps your child.
