Autism in children
Parent guide
Autism (a difference in how a child talks, plays, and feels the world) is not caused by bad parenting. Every child is different. Help can start even before a doctor gives a name for it.
What is autism?
Autism (also called ASD, autism spectrum disorder, the medical name) means a child’s brain works a bit differently. It can change how they talk, make friends, play, and how they feel sound, light, or touch.
“Spectrum” means every child is not the same. One child may talk a lot but find friends hard. Another child may use few words and cover their ears in a noisy shop.
Autism is not a disease to “cure”. Support can help the child feel safer and learn skills.
What do parents often notice?
These signs do not prove autism. They mean you can talk to a child doctor (paediatrician, a doctor for children) and ask about talking, play, and daily skills.
- Does not look when you call their name
- Does not point to show you something interesting
- Talks late, or repeats the same lines from TV
- Gets very upset if the routine changes
- Lines up toys or spins wheels more than pretend play
- Covers ears, avoids touch, or loves crashing into sofas
Who says it is autism?
A diagnosis (official name) is given by a qualified doctor or psychologist after they watch the child and ask you questions. A therapy visit does not replace that.
You do not need to wait for a paper to start help. If talking, play, or daily life is hard, speech therapy (help with talking) and occupational therapy (help with daily skills) can begin now.
What kind of help can start now?
A hearing check, a talking and play check, and a daily-skills check are common first steps. A useful plan is simple and can be copied at home, not a one-size class.
If a therapist thinks you also need a child doctor or psychologist, they should say so clearly.
Questions we hear in clinic
Do vaccines cause autism?
No. Vaccines do not cause autism.
Do phones cause autism?
No. Too much screen time can reduce talking practice, but it does not create autism.
Will my child talk?
Many children do. Some use words, some use pictures or both. The goal is a way to ask for what they need.
Can autism be cured?
No. Help can reduce stress and build skills. Be careful of anyone selling a “cure”.
Guides in this topic
- Signs of autism in toddlers: A toddler is a child about 1 to 3 years old. This list is for noticing, not for naming the child yourself.
- What happens in an autism check: An assessment (careful check) is not a trap. It is a structured look at your child.
- Repeating and routines: is it OCD?: OCD (unwanted fears and repeated actions to feel safe) is not the same as loving sameness in autism.
- How an autism check usually starts: You can start help while you wait for a specialist date.
